Cuba suffered another nationwide blackout on Sunday (8/2/2026). The incident has further worsened the energy crisis in the Caribbean island nation, forcing a number of residents in the capital to sleep along the beach to escape the heat.
This marks the sixth time a total blackout has hit Cuba within a span of a few months. The nationwide power failure occurred after the United States government, under the leadership of Donald Trump, effectively blocked imported oil supplies to Cuba since last January.
The embargo measures and tariff threats against oil-supplying countries have severely impacted Cuba's national energy infrastructure. Due to the lack of fuel supply, an electricity supply crisis erupted, triggering various cascading crises that further complicate daily life for the public.
