Inaugural 2026 IKD Assessment: North Maluku Ranks Best, Aceh Misses Out on Nominations

BANDA ACEH — Aceh Province failed to break into the ranks of top-nominated regions in the inaugural assessment of the 2026 Regional Engineering Index (Indeks Keinsinyuran Daerah or IKD). In this national-level engineering index evaluation, North Maluku Province successfully emerged as the best-performing region across Indonesia.

According to the released results of the inaugural 2026 IKD assessment, six provinces were officially shortlisted in the top nominees' roster. These six regions comprise Bali, DKI Jakarta, Lampung, North Maluku, Riau, and South Sulawesi. The inclusion of these provinces reflects their superior performance and the preparedness of their respective local engineering profession ecosystems.

Regional Distribution of 2026 IKD Nominees

The list of top nominees in the inaugural 2026 Regional Engineering Index assessment demonstrates a diverse geographical distribution across Indonesia’s major islands. From western Indonesia, Sumatra is represented by Riau and Lampung. Meanwhile, from Java, DKI Jakarta stands as the sole representative to secure a coveted spot among the prestigious nominees.

Central and eastern Indonesia also recorded notable representation. Bali represents the Nusa Tenggara island chain, while Sulawesi is represented by South Sulawesi. The peak achievement was captured by North Maluku, which was crowned the best-performing province, demonstrating progressive advancements in engineering capacity across the nation’s eastern region.

Aceh’s Standing in the Inaugural Assessment

For Aceh Province, the results of this maiden 2026 IKD assessment serve as a critical benchmark in its engineering human resource development. The absence of the "Land of Rencong" from the top six nominees highlights the urgent need to accelerate improvements in technical competency standards, engineering certifications, and engineers' active involvement in strategic regional planning.

The IKD assessment itself is designed to map capacity, governance, and the concrete contributions of engineering professionals at the provincial government level. The index also functions as an evaluative baseline for engineering human capital policies to support the rapid advancement of physical infrastructure, industrialization, and technological self-reliance throughout the country.

Strengthening the Engineering Ecosystem

The outcome of this inaugural 2026 assessment is expected to catalyze local governments that missed the nominations, including Aceh, to proactively deepen collaborations with professional engineering bodies and local engineering universities.

By enhancing governance and actively engaging certified engineers across all stages of public development, regions are anticipated to improve their ratings in subsequent index evaluation cycles and close the gap with leading provinces like North Maluku.
