Aceh – Indonesia, The situation in the Business Right (HGU) area of PT Bumi Flora, Banda Alam District, East Aceh Regency, suddenly flared up on Monday (28/9/2026). Hundreds of deeply frustrated protesters staged a demonstration that escalated into the alleged burning of several office buildings and the destruction of heavy equipment belonging to the company.
This violent act is strongly suspected to be the climax of outrage among residents and farmers’ groups over the agrarian conflict resolution that is seen as stagnant. For a long time, the land dispute between the company and the local community has failed to reach a clear resolution that satisfies both parties.
Tensions on the ground escalated further after various mediation efforts through official channels failed to produce tangible results for the farmers. One of the triggers for their frustration reportedly stemmed from the outcome of the Public Hearing (RDPU) with the House of Representatives’ Public Aspirations Body (BAM DPR RI) at the DPR RI Building on Wednesday (10/6/2026).
During that important forum, representatives of the East Aceh Farmers Union firmly voiced the agrarian conflict issues they face with PT Bumi Flora. However, the results from a series of RDPU meetings, both at the regional level through the DPRK and at the central level by DPR RI, were deemed to have failed in providing justice for the farmers.
“This likely occurred because the RDPUs conducted by both the DPRK and DPR RI have not yielded satisfactory results for the farmers’ groups or the crowd,” revealed a reliable source at the scene.
In response to the increasingly dangerous escalation, security forces had repeatedly issued appeals calling on the demonstrators and the farmers’ union to exercise restraint, maintain public order, and refrain from violent actions that harm many parties.
As of this report, security forces remain on full alert to restore order around the PT Bumi Flora area. Meanwhile, the primary motive as well as the instigators and parties responsible for setting fire to the company’s facilities are still under deep investigation by authorities. []
