JAKARTA – Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono announced Indonesia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) before the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly.
“Indonesia submits its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2029–2030 term,” Sugiono stated in Indonesia’s national statement delivered before the UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday, September 26, 2026, local time, monitored via live broadcast from Jakarta.
The Foreign Minister explained that Indonesia will champion the commitment to “Fostering Unity, Advancing Peace” for its UNSC candidacy.
According to the Minister, fostering unity means building trust in the multilateral system and ensuring that channels for dialogue among various international stakeholders remain open.
Meanwhile, advancing peace implies that Indonesia will continue to push for the upholding of international law and ensure that available instruments can be utilized for that purpose.
Indonesia is the right candidate to serve on the UNSC given its strong national commitment to contributing to world peace and conflict resolution, the Indonesian Foreign Minister added.
“Our Constitution mandates us to contribute to the world based on the values of independence, abiding peace, and social justice through diplomacy and mediation,” he said.
The Foreign Minister also highlighted Indonesia’s position as one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations since 1957, noting that Indonesian personnel have been serving as peacekeepers in Lebanon under UNIFIL for 20 years.
Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia will continue to keep dialogue open, build common ground, and turn shared responsibilities into concrete cooperation if granted the opportunity to contribute as part of the UNSC.
“We will bring the same principles that guide our foreign policy when engaging with all parties while keeping room for cooperation open,” he added.
In the Foreign Minister’s Annual Press Statement (PPTM) delivered on January 14, 2026, Sugiono announced that Indonesia planned to run for a non-permanent UNSC seat for the 2029–2030 period and would soon launch a campaign to gather support.
Indonesia has previously served as a non-permanent member of the UNSC four times, specifically during the periods of 1973–1974, 1995–1996, 2007–2008, and 2019–2021. Indonesia also held the presidency of the UNSC in August 2020.***
