Gampong Baru, located in Baiturrahman District, has officially become a role model for community-based environmental management in Banda Aceh. Mayor of Banda Aceh, Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal, directly inspected various Climate Village Program (Proklim) facilities in the area on Sunday (2/8/2026).
The visit took place after the Mayor participated in a community cleanup drive alongside local residents. Gampong Baru is considered highly deserving as a benchmark for successfully fostering public awareness in independently maintaining environmental cleanliness.
In support of the Climate Village Program, the residents of Gampong Baru have developed several waste management innovations. These include operating a Waste Bank, producing compost, applying 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and establishing Waste Collector Points (WCP).
Through these innovations, waste is no longer merely thrown away, but managed and repurposed. The Banda Aceh City Government continues to encourage other gampongs to replicate these innovative steps to create a healthier and greener urban environment.
