BMKG Issues Extreme Weather Early Warning: 14 Regions in Aceh On Alert for Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

BMKG issued an extreme weather warning for 14 regencies and cities in Aceh, facing potential heavy rain and strong winds on August 5–7, 2026.

BANDA ACEH — The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an extreme weather early warning for the public in Aceh Province. A total of 14 regencies and cities in Indonesia's westernmost region have been urged to heighten vigilance regarding potential moderate-to-heavy rainfall projected to be accompanied by strong winds from August 5 to 7, 2026.

The threat of severe weather stems from atmospheric dynamics indicating a significant increase in rain cloud formation activity over the Aceh region. Residents living in disaster-prone areas are advised to enhance their preparedness.

Atmospheric Phenomena Triggering Extreme Weather

The BMKG Class I Sultan Iskandar Muda Meteorological Station in Banda Aceh confirmed that this potential extreme weather is triggered by the active state of several atmospheric dynamic phenomena around the Aceh region. These atmospheric conditions trigger the concentration of air masses and accelerate the growth of convective clouds that could potentially bring sudden heavy rain and strong winds.

"This condition is triggered by active atmospheric phenomena that increase rain cloud growth in the Aceh region," said Indah, Forecaster on Duty at the BMKG Class I Sultan Iskandar Muda Meteorological Station in Banda Aceh.

This atmospheric activity creates unstable climate conditions. Rain cloud growth is predicted to expand across several regional areas, triggering an increase in rainfall intensity across affected locations.

Preparedness in 14 Regencies and Cities

Based on mapping and weather data analysis from BMKG, 14 regencies and cities in Aceh Province are listed under alert status. Members of the public in these areas are advised to continuously monitor official weather forecast updates from authorities.

The early warning, valid for three days from August 5 to 7, 2026, emphasizes the need for full preparedness among local residents and regional disaster management agencies. BMKG warned that continuous moderate-to-heavy rainfall could trigger follow-up hydrometeorological impacts, such as waterlogging, overflow flooding, and potential landslides in hilly areas and steep slopes.

Public Disaster Mitigation Measures

In facing potential hazards from strong winds and heavy rainfall, BMKG urges the public to take precautionary safety measures. Residents are asked to avoid sheltering under old trees, large billboards, or fragile building structures during severe weather. Motorists are also expected to exercise greater caution due to reduced visibility and slippery road conditions.

In addition, fishermen and sea transport operators in Aceh waters are advised to monitor sea wave heights, which could increase alongside high wind speeds. The BMKG Class I Sultan Iskandar Muda Meteorological Station in Banda Aceh emphasized that it will continue to regularly monitor developments in atmospheric dynamics and convey updated information to the public to minimize disaster risks.
