Flood and landslide survivors residing in temporary housing in Aceh Tamiang Regency are beginning to reap the rewards of an empowerment initiative. Through a program called Kebun Harmoni, the disaster survivors successfully harvested hydroponically grown vegetables and catfish, which they managed collaboratively.
The cultivation project is the result of a partnership between PT East West Seed Indonesia (EWINDO) and the School of Life Sciences and Technology at Institut Teknologi Bandung (SITH ITB). The collaboration was specifically tailored to guide residents in temporary shelters toward self-sufficiency in meeting their daily food needs.
The Kebun Harmoni initiative not only addresses the daily food requirements of shelter residents. Beyond fulfilling basic needs, the success of this collective harvest serves as a vital catalyst for rebuilding the social and economic conditions of the disaster-affected community.
