BANDA ACEH — The MORA Research Team of Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh has officially urged the strengthening of the Local Intellectual Property (KIL) protection system as a strategic move to preserve cultural heritage while driving community-based creative economic growth in Aceh Province.
This strategic initiative was discussed and followed up through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the Implementation of Local Intellectual Property (KIL) and the Signing of a Joint Commitment. This key event took place in the Meeting Room of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LP2M) at UIN Ar-Raniry, Banda Aceh, on Wednesday (5/8/2026).
Protection of Local Cultural Heritage
Efforts to strengthen Local Intellectual Property protection focus on identifying and patenting various cultural practices, traditional expertise, and regional specialty products across the Land of Rencong. This legal protection step is crucial to ensuring that ancestral heritage is not unilaterally claimed by external parties, while preserving the authenticity and integrity of Acehnese culture.
Through proper regulations and legal frameworks, Local Intellectual Property protection is expected to provide a sense of security for local artisans, artists, and indigenous communities to continue creating and preserving inherited traditions.
Driving Community Economic Growth
In addition to serving as a safeguard for historical and cultural values, optimizing KIL is designed to unlock major opportunities in the creative economy sector. With clear intellectual property legality, local cultural products gain added commercial value and greater competitiveness in both national and global markets.
This community-based creative economy development is expected to directly boost local incomes, alleviate poverty through local empowerment, and foster an independent and sustainable creative business ecosystem in Aceh.
Formulating the KIL Grand Design
The FGD and joint commitment signing are an integral part of an in-depth research agenda entitled "Grand Design of Local Intellectual Property (KIL)" conducted by the MORA Research Team at UIN Ar-Raniry. The study aims to design a comprehensive master plan covering the systematic mapping, registration, and governance of KIL.
Through this Grand Design, UIN Ar-Raniry is committed to preparing a strategic framework for local governments and stakeholders to inventory local cultural assets, ensuring that all of Aceh's potential assets are optimally accommodated and protected.
